The challenge

Where the Project Started

A growing storefront had outgrown its original theme. Navigation had accumulated over time, product discovery was inconsistent across devices and the checkout path carried unnecessary steps.

Strategy

How We Approached It

  • Rebuild the category taxonomy around how customers actually search rather than internal structure.
  • Reduce the checkout path to the minimum required steps and states.
  • Set a performance budget before design work started so speed was a constraint, not an afterthought.

Execution

What We Delivered

  • Designed a responsive component library covering listings, product detail, cart and checkout.
  • Rebuilt templates with lazy-loaded media, modern image formats and reduced third-party scripts.
  • Introduced consistent empty, loading and error states across every commerce surface.

Results

Outcomes and Observations

Described qualitatively. Verified numeric results are shared with clients directly rather than published.

Faster shopping experience

Lighter templates and prioritised hero assets improved perceived load speed.

Clearer product discovery

A simplified taxonomy reduced the number of steps to reach a product.

Maintainable front-end

The team can now ship new sections without developer support.

Learnings

What We Took Forward

Performance budgets agreed before design prevent expensive rework later.

Taxonomy work delivers more discovery improvement than surface-level visual changes.
